Book Review

Killian's book "Ways of Seeing" is very visually interesting with the incorporation of color, digital drawing, and photos. The title is apt as it feels like viewing the world with extreme synesthesia. The use of bright colors in general ties the book together (as well as the use of digital drawing and the color repetitions of the photos), and then the two pages that we view together have the same color themes creating further cohesion. The only place the colors don't quite work for me is page 10 where instead of creating a color theme based on two colors, there are at least three main colors. The placement of the photos with the digitally drawn one on the left and the color repeated photo on the right throughout the book (with the exception of the center piece) help to make the book come together as a visual narrative. The book does appear to be missing a back cover though, it would be good to see one added with the same theme as the front cover. Overall, I believe it is a successful artist's book as it not only looks good, but creates a visual narrative that the viewer can follow, evoking the feeling of seeing with different eyes.
